Posted on July 13, 2016

They run around the neighbourhood and in the house sticking their noses almost in all the unimaginable places. Despite this, we still enjoy their warm cuddles which often come with kisses. Well, that kiss could be good for you.

Scientists believe that dog kisses are healthy. Not only are these kisses not hazardous, but scientists are of the opinion that a kiss from your favourite furry pal could actually improve your health. Here’s more on why those dog kisses are healthy.

Probiotic Effect

A section of scientists considers that the microorganisms contained in a dog’s gut could have a probiotic effect on the human body – encouraging the growth of positive microorganisms. In essence, the canines could be having a probiotic effect pretty much like that of yoghurt However, this is yet to be proven.

Currently, there is a mix of scientific information that is on either side of whether those dog kisses are healthy or not. One such scientist, Dr. Thomas Nolan, a professor of parasitology at the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Veterinary Medicine, notes that although it is possible for a dog to transfer harmful parasites to humans, it is highly unlikely.

He, however, cautions against this for certain vulnerable groups.

When to take Extra Caution

Although it is difficult to tell the number of people who became ill as a result of smooching their canine friends, there are some people who are at a higher risk of falling ill.

Young babies whose immune systems are yet to fully develop or people whose immune systems have been compromised for instance a diabetic or an HIV carrier. In addition, pregnant women, elderly people and people with open sores such as teenagers who have pimples are at a greater risk of contracting illnesses from their pet friends.

The relationship between dogs and humans goes deeper than the skin. It is hard to imagine of a dog owner who doesn’t occasionally receive a kiss from his pal. To avoid the risk of disease and ensure those dog kisses remain healthy, confirm that you have taken all necessary veterinary care and regularly deworm your furry friend.
