What Tortoise Is Right for Me

Tortoises live really long lives. So it’s a lifetime commitment between you and your pet tortoise.

Choosing the right one is a task for there are many different species of them. There are some factors based on which you can make your choice. And at the end of this, we have that solved for you!

1. Climate

Climates must imperatively influence your choice.

If you live in a climate that is usually warm and wet, forest species like red/yellow footeds, hinge-backs can be the right choice.

However, if you live in a warm and dry climate, dry grassland species are more suitable. For example, Sulcata, Leopards and Mediterranean species.

And if you live in a region that has short, dry summers and long winters, Russian tortoises are perfect!

2. Space available

If you have limited space available, you can consider terrestrial tortoises. They’re only about 4-6 inches long, but they are very expensive and also endangered species.

If you have decent space available for your new pets home, Russian or Stepe tortoises, Hinge-backs (not serrated) and Mediterranean turtles are advisable. They’re about 6-8 inches long.

3. Easy to care for

This comes down to the Russian, Red-footed and Hermanns. Sulcatas and Leopard species can also be considered. They’re all easy to care for and can survive in almost any habitat. If you’re looking for an easy to feed turtle that is small and won’t require a lot of care, the Russian tortoise is a popular beginner. A tortoise for a pet is a lot more challenging than a caged animal or fish, but it’s a whole new experience!
