The most common reason for dogs to eat their own stool is when they have a nutrient deficiency. Dogs may resort to Coprophagia (the medical word for eating faeces) when they lack key nutrients in their diet. At times, your dog could just be hungry and likes the smell and taste. If such behaviour persists after changing his diet, talk to a vet.

When they sniff the butt, they perceive vital information pertaining to the identity, health and other attributes of each other.
